Quotes from the opinion leaders who participated in the memorial:
Said Philanthropist, Mrs. Parmeshwar Godrej, “As we offer our prayers to those who have lost their lives to AIDS, it is important that each member of society recommits himself to the cause. I encourage everyone, civil society, NGOs, government agencies, opinion leaders and each of the communities involved in the effort, to come together as a powerful force for positive change and remove the stigma and discrimination that impedes our progress towards a world without HIV. To achieve this I request you to join Heroes AIDS Project”
K Sujatha Rao, Special Secretary and Director General, National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) said, “Today as we light a candle to remember those who have died of AIDS, we also resolve to brighten the lives of all living with HIV & AIDS : reach out, care and accept them in your lives at every level. AIDS is now a chronic manageable disease and each of us in society needs to take care of ourself and those around us.”
Dr. S S Kudalkar, Project Director, Mumbai District AIDS Control Society (MDACS) & Deputy Municipal Commissioner, Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai added:“An ordinary candle can light thousands and millions of other candles to spread the light. Similarly, every person should determine & spread the message to make the world free of HIV & AIDS.”
Said Hrithik Roshan, Bollywood Superstar, “Over the last few decades, HIV/AIDS has wrecked economies, orphaned children, exhausted health systems, strained education, and deepened poverty. Social stigma and discrimination against those with HIV has only made matters worse. Today, more than ever before, we need action – action that results from coming together. Today, on the occasion of the International Candlelight Memorial in Mumbai, let’s declare our solidarity in response to this epidemic and recommit ourselves to the cause.”
Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman, Aditya Birla Group said: “As a member of the corporate community, I call upon my peers and colleagues to ensure that no individual affected by HIV is denied job opportunities, discriminated against in the workplace or deprived of the support they need. Our corporate leaders need to continue their focus on ensuring equal opportunity and progress. This can be done by educating their workforces and providing for more inclusive and sensitive workplace policies. It is these actions and attitudes that will ensure we build a society that is united in the movement to overcome HIV/AIDS – and it is the corporate sector that needs to drive this change”
Farhan Akhtar, Renowned Actor, Director and Producer said: “Today, India’s youth are a force to reckon with. In order to realize their true potential, each of them needs to ensure that they look after their health. The first steps towards this are acquiring the right information, encouraging their peers to act responsibly, spreading awareness and getting themselves tested. This can happen only if each of us takes it upon ourselves to ensure that we put an end to the stigma surrounding HIV and open our eyes and minds to the situation in our country”
Said Nandita Das, Actor & Director: “I am here to express my solidarity and reinforce the urgency that is needed to bring about awareness around the issue of HIV & AIDS. The responsibility largely lies with all of us as a society that is badly prejudiced and insensitive to a community that has been marginalized over the years”
Shobhaa De, Author and Columnist said: “People can live many years with HIV. Start talking about HIV & AIDS with your friends, family, neighbours and colleagues. Let the message spread faster than the virus”

A Poem of Hope
Aao qasam khayein hum zindagi se mohabbat kareinge Yeh zindagi khoobsoorat hai iski hifazat kareinge..

26th International AIDS Candle Light Memorial, Pune
“Let us come together and end the stigma surrounding HIV,” that was the clarion call given by People Living with HIV, concerned citizens and activists as scores of people, assembled on the MG Road, held their hands in unison and pledged support to the community.
The occasion was the 26th International Candlelight Memorial organised by the Wake Up Pune HIV & AIDS awareness campaign to pay tribute to those who have lost their lives to AIDS and show support for those living with and affected by HIV. The event was also aimed at educating public about the various problems and stigma associated with HIV & AIDS.
Held on 20th May, instead of 17th May to accommodate vote counting, the Candlelight Memorial, part of a global movement observed across 115 countries, was well attended by thousands of Puneites. Themed, ‘Together, We Are the Solution’; the event received tremendous support from the community, civil society leaders, politicians, doctors and academicians.
The crowd pledged on the Heroes Project’s ‘I WILL’ Pledge, to commit to the cause of HIV, not stigmatise people infected with HIV and help them to live a healthy and positive life. The dignitaries signed the pledge card and urged the crowd to spread the message of the pledge.
The MG Road crowd was treated to a varied programme, featuring street plays, performances from the dance troupe from Ashwood Mission Hospital and children from DISHA and live music from the SAHARA band.
The evening began with two rallies, one from Sassoon Hospital and the other from Golibar Maidan, and led by People Living with HIV (PLHIV), NGOs working in the field of HIV & AIDS, and Civil Society. The rallies converged on MG Road where the Candlelight Vigil was held as each member of the audience lit a candle and took a moment to remember all who have died from AIDS-related illnesses.
26th International AIDS Candle Light Memorial, Bangalore (31 May 2009)
As a part of the Global AIDS Week of Action (GAWA) 2009, Candle Light Memorial was observed by the Bangalore HIV & AIDS Forum, a collection of more than 30 NGOs and CBOs working on HIV and AIDS issues, on 31 May 2009. Following are some of the highlights of the programme.
Door-to-Door Campaign by the Community
The community did a 3 days’ Door-to-Door Campaign seeking solidarity from the general public. They visited families residing in Neelasandra, Vannarpet & Austin Town areas of Bangalore City. They oriented them on the event and its importance, gave each of the families a candle and requested them to either join the event or to light the candles in their own houses in remembrance of those who lost their lives to the epidemic.
Also, posters & pamphlets were used to mobilise people, public servants, PLHIV, doctors & counselors at ART, ICTC and PPTCT Centers.
Community Participation
Nearly 1000 people took part in the Candlelight Memorial event & more than two-third of the crowd was from the community. The event was inaugurated with a prayer song by the community, which was followed by testimonies shared by 3 women community leaders. 2 women community leaders anchored the event.
The Health Secretary, NRHM Director, Principal Secretary for Women & Child Development, Project Director of KSAPS (Karnataka State AIDS Prevention Society), Project Director of Karnataka Health Promotion Trust (KHPT) & priests from religious institutions (Hindu, Muslim, Christian) were invited to support the event & extend their solidarity. Though some of the invitees could not join us for the event, they ensured some of their colleagues represent them at the event. The priests & community leaders on the dais inaugurated the Lighting of the Candle. All the people patiently took part in the event. Since it began raining heavily soon after the lighting of candles, the proposed Candle Light Walk unfortunately could not happen. Nevertheless, the atmosphere at the event was inspiring, encouraging a spirit of togetherness and community. The testimonials by community members were truly eye-opening.
Sangeeetha said that when she was thrown out of her in-laws’ place after the death of her husband, an NGO showed her the way towards positive living. As a result of this, today she is working as a Peer Counselor counseling hundreds of community people a day. Acknowledging her parents’ efforts to educate her up to the 10th std., Sangeetha demanded that the state should be responsible in creating a dignified livelihood for all those illiterate / low literate community members.
Mamtha shared that 6 years back when she was tested positive, her husband & in-laws threw her out of the house. They also snatched away her 2-year-old son from her. For more than 3 years she slept on the road side. Mamtha’s question is, “Is there a better livelihood option other than begging and sex work for a young, illiterate and homeless woman?” Mamta’s demand is for an environment in which all women can peacefully enjoy their human rights.
Prema is a role model for all those parents with a positive child. She has been nurturing & protecting her positive son over 14 years. Her challenge to us is, “Who is responsible for ensuring child rights of the infected & affected children, especially orphan children?”
Heroes Project was honoured to be part of the organising committee for this event, which was a beautiful illustration of the power of community in combating the myriad challenges of HIV and AIDS.
